This program allows you to add a second heating source to your current system and gain the comfort and security of electric heat at a lower electric rate. The system includes two fuel sources; electricity as your primary system and a back-up fuel source of either liquid propane (LP) gas or fuel oil.
Dual fuel systems are metered separately. A radio receiver is attached to receive the signal from the central control location. During peak periods, when demand for electricity is highest, a dispatcher will switch your home's fuel source, by use of the radio receiver — without interruption of service — from electricity to your secondary fuel backup source during the control time. After the control period, the receiver will receive another signal to turn your electric heat back on and turn your back-up source off.
Installing a dual fuel system can significantly reduce your power cost and allow for better load management throughout the Cooperative’s entire electrical system.
If the primary source of residential heat is electricity, then the electricity consumed is not taxable during the winter heating months (bills received in December through May).
To get started, complete the Dual Fuel Agreement located under "Programs" on the 'Forms' page and then call the Cooperative at 507-367-7000 or 800-214-2694 to get your home fitted for dual fuel and start saving today!
